The Paparazzi Phone: The Oppo 7 Find

The Chinese electronics manufacturer Oppo has just debuted the Find 7 phone–what we’ve dubbed–the “The Paparazzi Phone”.

The Oppo 7 utilizes a special Super Zoom software mode that  “tricks” its 13 MP camera into being able to create 50 MP shots. When Super Zoom is enabled, the camera takes 10 burst shots at an extremely high rate, takes the best four shots, then combines them into a (rather large) 10 MB file. This allows for that fine, up-in-your-pores detail; cropping the subject of the image at 100% yields some pretty startling results.

I was particularly impressed by the photo of the road taken from, what appears to be, at least half a mile away. While the cropped version isn’t perfectly sharp by any means, you still get a level of detail from a great distance. Still, it’ll be interesting to see how the 41 MP Nokia Lumia 1020’s PureView camera will compete.

The Find 7 runs Android 4.3 (Jellybean), has a 2.3 GHz SnapDragon 800processor. As far as size, the Find 7 is 5.5 inches which puts it between the 5.1″ Samsung Galaxy S5 and the ginormous 6″ Nokia Lumia 1520. There are two versions; the Find 7 Lite (Find 7a) that retails for $499 and the pro Find 7 which goes for a cool $599. Full specs and pics are listed below.

It would be cool to create Where’s Waldo-esque picture games by taking shots of huge crowds then zooming in to find people doing things you wouldn’t see otherwise. The rapid charging feature is a huge complement to the phone considering you’ll probably be on this thing for hours. However the base internal space is somewhat meager as each Super Zoom shot at 10 MB a pop will fill up quickly if you’re shooting Super Zoom shots willy nilly. However that explains why Oppo allowed for expandable storage. Regardless, I’d definitely love to give this phone a go.

Do you like the Oppo 7 Find? Would you purchase it? Or is the Lumia PureView cam still king? Let us know in the comments!
